The History Behind the Game
The Blackjack game has been played for hundreds of years between friends, royalty, nobility or simply as a game between families. There are many professional players all around the world who compete in high stakes tournaments online and in land-based casinos.
It’s an incredibly popular game with a huge following. Though if we really want to understand the passion for this well-loved game, we need to go back to the beginning.
From Spain to France
It’s thought that the game has its original roots in Spain, though no one exactly knows for sure. The first written record was discovered in the book ‘Rinconete y Cortadillo’ in the 1600s, which was written by the famous Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes.
The two main characters of this book spent their days cheating people out of money with the card game of ‘Veinituna’ (which is Spanish for 21). The book refers to the Aces values being 1 or 11, with the aim being to get as close to the number 21 as possible. This lets us know that the game was being played in Spain in the 17th century, which is a long time ago!
Historical records then show us that the game popped up in France in 1768. With the UK and USA following in around 1800 with the game ‘Vingt-Un’ (which is French for 21).
From Vingt-Un to Modern Day
The very first printed rules of the game were in English in 1825, with the game finally ending up with the name that we are familiar with in around 1899. But how did we get there from ‘Vingt-Un’?
There’s a popular idea that when the game hit the USA, gambling houses as they were known then, offered players bonuses to get them to play. One of these bonuses was a 10-1 payout if a player held a black jack and an ace of spades. This hand was of course called a ‘Blackjack’.
Debunking the Myth
Thierry Depaulis, a French card historian, recently poured salt onto this theory. He believes that the game name was devised during the Klondike Gold Rush between 1896 and 1899. When the bonus was a regular Ace and any 10 point card. Back then the mineral zincblende was known as ‘Blackjack’ and could often be found with gold or silver by the prospectors. It’s more likely that this is where the game got its infamous name from.
Strategies
The very first playing strategy was devised in 1956 by Roger Baldwin, Wilbert Cantey, James McDermott and Herbet Maisel. These men created a mathematically and scientifically proven method which they named as ‘The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack’. This was published in the Journal of American Statistical Association. It was this paper that went on to fuel the passions of many players in the attempt to beat the dealer.
Ed Thorp is one of the most famous players in the world who used this strategy to help him win many games. He used Roger Baldwin’s hand calculation method to verify his own basic strategy in his 1963 book ‘Beat the Dealer’.
